In 2010, my man and I were still proud owners of an old school blue hippie bus: a Volkswagen T2 from 1973, decorated with Hawaii flowers and stickers from pin up girls. Picture perfect! Sunglasses on, Joss Stone blasting through the speakers (a forgotten CD of the previous owners), praying that the engine would run and voilà: off to la douce France. Soon, one thing became clear: rushing doesn’t work with such an old-timer. So we skipped the Péage and drove with a maximum speed of 50 miles per hour to the south of France on the most magical roads.
That summer made us fall in love with Burgundy. The average Route du Soleil-driver makes an overnight stop in this region, only to get back behind the wheel as soon as possible. That’s a pity! Because it is beautiful there.
Last week, we visited Burgundy again. This time without a van, but instead with a dog and a 1 year old toddler. Another reason not to rush. We stayed a week on the domain of Chateau de Salorges which we booked on gites.nl. We were welcomed with fresh eggs, honey from the region and a bouquet of beautiful flowers. La douce France: a beautiful farmhouse; the French call it a ‘manoir’. The farmhouse was decorated with greyish blue shades and a dazzling staircase, ancient plane trees and a sunny ‘cour’ with a herb garden. Last but not least: a magnificent view over the wooded hills, crystal clear rivers and grazing cows. A wonderful view! The owners also run their own barn on this property. Already getting excited?
Relaxing for 8 days: laissez-faire! Wander through typical French villages such as Autun (with the beautiful Saint-Lazare Cathedral as a must-see) and Vézelay pilgrimage, enjoy delicious local wines, freshly baked quiche Lorraine and Crottin de Chavignol (France’s most popular goat’s cheese) at the local market.
I also made a lot of new purchases at the various ‘vide greniers’ (barn markets) in the area, while enjoying French fries with mérgez and a cold beer in the sun. La vie est belle!
